University of Niigata Prefecture, Japan: International Joint Summer Seminar 2019
01-03-2019

Outline of the Programme

Collaborating with local municipalities in the Niigata prefecture, the University of Niigata Prefecture (UNP) has housed students from universities located in Niigata, to jointly hold 6 rounds of Summer Seminars in the past years.

Based on its central theme — “Globalization and Local Development”, the Seminar aims to provide participating students with extraordinary opportunities to experience and learn, through special lectures, field trips, and group works. Students are expected to present their ideas for local competence. We hope that all these activities contribute to cross-cultural interactions among the students, expand participants’ horizon and enhance their potential as future leaders in the global arena.

This year (2019), carrying on the theme of “Foods of Niigata — Impressing the World” from last year, the UNP invites 3 students from OMU to gather at Niigata during the summer. Their goal is to discuss and propose their ideas in creating and rediscovering local potentials via special lectures, field trips, and group works.

As the venue of field trips, the cities of Niigata, Agano, Tsubame and Sanjo are richly endowed with agricultural produces, fomented cuisines and kitchen utensils. Their unique food culture, nurtured by its abundant natural resources, makes it a valuable site for people to understand its local nature, history and culture through food.

Against the backdrop of the coming 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, participants will hold in-depth discussions on how the city can bring the best of these attractive points to invigorate its community. It is very important for students to share and compare the challenges and solutions in their countries with those of Niigata. This would help them come up with novel ideas to solve the problems and further enhance local charms.
