Scholarship programme of the City of Kiel
for Students from Kiel´s Twin Cities
for a 10-month Study period at Kiel University
The City of Kiel has a longstanding tradition of offering scholarships for a 10-month study period at Kiel University. The regulations for these scholarships have recently been modified. Eligible are now students from universities in Kiel´s twin cities. The scholarships shall contribute to foster the close relationship between the City of Kiel and its twin cities as well as to support talented international students and to strengthen their interest in academic study and research.
For the
academic year 2018/2019 four full-year scholarships
are available.
Eligible are students from their 3rd semester of studies (Bachelor´s and Master´s level). Study projects with a reference to the City of Kiel (e.g. Kiel´s history, Marine Science) or covering one of the research foci of Kiel University will particularly be supported.
Kiel University has currently four interdisciplinary research foci:
• Marine & Geosciences
• Applied Life Sciences
• Nano and Surface Sciences
• Societal, Environmental, Cultural Change
Kiel University is also renown for Economics, (International) Law and for its specific focus on the Baltic Sea, especially in many disciplines in the humanities. For further information, please refer to our

Language of instruction: Programmes at Bachelor’s level are usually taught in German. At the Master’s level we offer several programmes which are fully taught in English (see quick link “International Master programmes” on our website: www.international.uni-kiel.de/).
The City of Kiel is interested in developing close links with its scholarship holders, not only during the scholarship period but also beyond.
The Scholarship
The scholarship amounts to € 750 per month for the period October, 2018 until July, 2019. A prolongation is not possible. The scholarship is adequate to cover the living costs in Kiel. We can offer rooms in a student dormitory for € 180 to € 220 per month. The semester fee – which includes a bus ticket – is about
€ 120. Fees for health assurance are about € 80 per month. Lunch for a moderate price is available in the university cafeteria.
The home institution must confirm that all candidates are needy, i.e. that they do not have sufficient financial resources to carry out a study abroad on their own.
Language requirements
- Students who apply for study programmes which are taught in German have to prove that they have at least language proficiency that corresponds to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
- Students who apply for study programmes which are taught in English have to prove that they have at least language proficiency that corresponds to level B2.
Application Procedure
Applicants are requested to apply via the Rector´s office of their home universities only. Application forms are available in the International Offices of the home universities. The application must include: letter of motivation with intended study project in Kiel, CV, transcript of records, two letters of academic recommendation from the docents of the field of study, proof of language requirements, one photo.
The universities in Kiel´s Twin Cities are kindly requested to recommend not more than three students per institution and to send the list of their nominees to Kiel University by February 15th, 2018.
